Ear wax is a yellowish waxy substance produced inside the ear canal. In small to moderate amounts it actually is beneficial to us. It offers protection to the skin of the ear canal, assists with cleaning and lubrication and also gives us protection from harmful bacteria, fungus, insects and water.  When too much wax is produced however, or when the wax  presses against the eardrum, it can impair hearing and cause other symptoms.

When ear wax causes decreased hearing or other annoying symptoms it can be removed in our Miami clinic in many ways. Softening the wax with hydrogen peroxide is often followed by a gentle vacuuming of the wax.

 

In our practice we have found that this gentle vacuuming is the method favored by our patients so it is used most often. Other methods include utilizing a gentle water flush or grabbing the wax and dislodging with a special instrument known as a forceps.
